题目材料:
This passage is adapted from material published in 2009.
Once “talkies” replaced silent movies that had live musical accompaniment, over 3,200 New York City pit musicians were suddenly jobless. The musicians union waged a campaign, culminating in a strike, to return live music to movie theaters, but it ended in utter disaster in1937, when it became clear that the rest of the working class would not support them. The union was struggling against an inevitable tide. Working-class people not only preferred sound films but appreciated the ticket price, which was lower without the live talent. Freed from paying wages and from union regulations governing musicians hours, theater owners could show films all day, and the Depression-era jobless could escape the weather or their troubles by spending afternoons at the movies for a few cents.
