题目材料:
Along one part of Califonia's San Andreas Fault, the land sometimes shifts slightly. Some researchers hypothesize that such shifts occur a few days before virtually all earthquakes measuring above 3.3 on the Richter scale of magnitude. Therefore, if these researchers are right, and if such shifts can be reliably detected when they occur, then it is possible to predict, merely by watching for shifts, whether such an earthquake will occur within a few days.
