The audibility of the Aurora Borealis [northern lights] was a contentious issue among many nineteenth - century researchers of the Arctic. Distinct sounds of rushing, hissing, rustling, and crackling during auroral activity were consistently reported by indigenous Arctic inhabitants: indeed, the Sami people called the Aurora Borealis guovssahas—the light that can be heard—and associated it with drumming in their folklore. While descriptions of auroral sounds were remarkably similar across regions and cultures, no instrumental evidence of the sounds was ever produced; as a result, most scientists concluded that they did not exist. However, scientists continued to disagree about possible causes behind reports of auroral audibility, with explanations ranging from acoustic illusion to environmental noise to tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
